You’re Not Struggling With Obedience; You’re Obeying the Wrong Thing.

There’s a lie circulating in modern Christianity that sounds humble on the surface:
“I’m just struggling to be obedient.”
No you’re not.
You’re obeying perfectly.
Just not God.
The Misdiagnosis
We’ve labeled this generation as:
• distracted
• inconsistent
• immature in faith
But that’s not the issue.
The real issue is this:
Obedience never left… it just got reassigned.
You Were Built to Obey
From the beginning, humanity was never designed to be autonomous.
In Genesis 1:26, we were created in His image and likeness;
which means we were created to:
• reflect
• respond
• remain under authority
Obedience isn’t something you learn.
It’s something you already do.
So if you’re not surrendered to God…
You didn’t stop obeying.
You just gave your obedience to something else.
The Great Substitution
Here’s what replaced Kingdom surrender:
Culture
• “Be true to yourself”
• “Follow your heart”
• “Do what feels right”
Emotion
• “I feel led…”
• “That didn’t sit right with me…”
• “I just don’t have peace about it…”
Community
• “Everyone else is doing it”
• “This is what our circle believes”
• “This is how we’ve always done it”
And here’s the problem:
All three produce the feeling of obedience without submission to God.
It Feels Like Obedience… But It’s Not
Just because something feels spiritual does not mean it is surrendered.
You can:
• Cry in worship
• Feel inspired by a message
• Be moved by a moment
…and still be completely disconnected from obedience to the King.
The Mirror Most Won’t Look Into
Ask this honestly:
Do I obey God when it contradicts what I feel?
That’s where the line is drawn.
Not when it’s convenient.
Not when it’s affirmed.
Not when it resonates.
But when it costs you:
• your preference
• your comfort
• your identity
Emotional Christianity: The Counterfeit System
We’ve created a version of faith that runs on:
• inspiration instead of instruction
• affirmation instead of correction
• experience instead of authority
And it’s dangerous because:
It produces followers who feel deeply but submit rarely.
Why This Works So Well
Because emotional obedience:
• gives instant feedback
• builds community quickly
• feels alive and engaging
But the Kingdom doesn’t operate on feedback loops.
It operates on authority.
Kingdom Obedience (What We Lost)
Real obedience sounds like this:
• “Not my will”
• “He said it, I follow it”
• “Even if I don’t understand”
It doesn’t ask:
• “Do I like this?”
• “Does this feel right?”
It asks one question:
What did the King say?
The Hard Truth
You are not struggling with obedience.
You are faithfully obeying something that is not God.
And as long as that remains true…
You will:
• feel spiritual
• look engaged
• sound aligned
…but never actually be submitted.
The Shift Back to the Kingdom
The solution is not:
• more motivation
• better messages
• deeper emotional moments
The solution is this:
Surrender your right to decide.
Final Line
“We didn’t lose obedience… we reassigned it.
And now we’re calling emotional agreement ‘obedience,’
when real obedience begins where agreement ends.”
